Silver Linings: Belmont Children's & Family Photographer

There are some people that will focus and lament the sole cloud on a sunny day. And others that will make the best in the gloomiest of circumstances. S is one of those people. The latter half ;p

She has courageously, and with an incredible sense of humor, gone through 6 months (after a breast cancer diagnosis) of grueling therapy. I can only hope that should such turmoil ever fall on my family, I would have the grace and strength S has shown this whole time.

She contacted me some time back asking if we can schedule a time where we can do a session for her family before her hair had grown back. Well, of course! Our time together really highlighted how strong and loving her kids have had to be these past few months too. Yet they, like their mommy, still are silly and funny. Simply awesome.

My grandmother ultimately died because of breast cancer. I was really young and really did not understand (nor had the ability to understand) the treatment she went through. Reading S' tales describing the process has been a very awakening dose of reality and an invaluable insight into my family history.
Thank you guys for letting me do this. You have left an incredible imprint on me.

Ray of Light: San Mateo Maternity Photographer

I love tracking the sun as it rises in the sky in the mornings. Many photographers prefer the afternoon, but mornings are my favorite time of day. The air is cool, crisp... full of newness (yes this is a real word, I even looked it up). In general my < 3ft-tall clients are still wearing their better personalities... while the big people find happiness in a cup of coffee :)

No exception, doing this session with C and J was a lot of fun for me. The sun was climbing through the tall redwood trees. The location was serene and (mostly) empty, and I had two about-to-be parents with a sense of humor and willingness to try anything. Heaven!
By the way, that sense of humor, and willingness to try anything -- excellent traits for first-time parents.

I can't wait to meet their little one in a few weeks!

I love, love, love when my families ask to incorporate something of their lives into our session. It just really helps bring into being who they are. And it can be as small as a simple shirt. So when A asked that we take some photographs of her and B wearing their Sharks jerseys, I got really excited.

I love working with adults alone, as much as I like working with families. Each age group has it's own challenges, but it also has some remarkable rewards too. A & B were no exception.

This is a Marriage Bell. Celtic custom has it that all young couples should have such a bell in their home, and when they have an argument, either one can ring it and declare a truce (without declaring fault). I wonder who rings it more often... although I hope it rarely has need to be rung.
Do they make these for parenting???

Generations: San Jose Children's & Family Photographer

It's a little bittersweet to think about how much this little guy has changed since the first time that I met him. He's gone from the infant whose face lit up when Mortimer Moose was in his presence, to being all about the traditional 2-yr old boy obsessions: sticks (at least that makes for a cheap date!)

I feel honored that K asked that this milestone photo session incorporated all grandparents and great-grandparents again. It is really special to see four generations being so close.
It also brings a smile to my face to see E let go of his mommy's hand and run to hold grandpa's instead. That's some serious love right there!

In addition to caring for E, K is finishing up her degree, which genuinely baffles me. Girl gets great grades too. Where do you find the time, K? She'll be graduating this spring, and asked me to take some images for her department booklet. Gorgeous, right?

I'll give you one guess what kept E busy while mommy was getting some 1:1 time with my camera: Angry birds. Figures! :)

How could I have possibly forgotten to tell you guys about this little dude? I was searching for his session photos yesterday, and then I realized I never posted them [sad]. Egg on my face and I completely blame it on last year’s crazy busy November. I mean look at this face, and those eyes: definitely NOT forgettable!

I’m really looking forward to seeing little Q again in a few weeks. He'll be 6 months then, and I'm excited to see all the new things he will do. Maybe he'll give me some awesome toothless grins by then.

Parenthood - the most thrilling ride: San Mateo Newborn Photographer

Lille H was due on this side of this belly in December. But as babies go, their arrival is purely unpredictable -- they can come weeks early, or they can be fashionably late. As I was patiently awaiting news, I was beginning to reconcile to the idea, that H and I might not meet until the new year. But, as luck would have it, he closed out 2011 with a session on New Year's Eve. Honestly? I can't think of a better way to bid adieu to something old then to meet someone brand new.

Big sis Lambchop isn't quite sure what to make of him yet. While she's not fully sure if he's food, she's pretty excited about his diapers, that's for sure.

Congratulations, you guys! He's perfect. And that sleepy baby pout? To swoon over!

Kids will be kids: Atherton Children's & Family Photographer

My oldest son has the innate ability to sense when we have a family portrait session coming up. In the 2 weeks leading up to it, he pulls his most dangerous stunts to assure a facial injury. I'm "thiiiis" close to purchasing a full face helmet for the kid and locking him in a padded room for the time leading up to photo sessions.

So it was with a sympathetic heart (and a chuckle) that I agreed to reschedule G's session as K had taken a tumble and it's marks were visible on his face. By the time our rescheduled session rolled around, K was almost healed and a little processing magic leaves no scars behind :) Since you can never predict when the next tumble will come, just go with the flow. Kid will be kids, right?

Dry Karma: Belmont Family Photographer

It's the time of year when no out-door photo-session is really, really safe from rain. As I drove up to our meeting spot, I gazed at the skies. They were turning gray and dark, and all I could think of was "Oh please, don't let it rain!" I had checked the weather report over and over, and it was supposed to stay dry. I don't want a weather fake out. Someone had good karma, because the rain kept at bay.

Meanwhile, these guys were awesome!!! While I love the spontaneity of little ones, I also love the willing cooperation of older kids too. And N was such a great subject. Not only was he a huge help with his little bro, but he was eager to recommend pictures he wanted to try too. Love it!

I first met little C when she had just turned one. I visited again a few months later. But this time, when dad opened the door and I looked down, I was taken aback by just how big she had gotten. Had time really passed that quickly? It's striking how much a year makes a difference for little kids!

Big sister, C is as awesome and silly as before. These girls are fun, and that is what our photo-session ended up being too: it became about observing the two of them at play, in their little world. It's pretty awesome!

Look at these guys. The last time I saw them they were wee little newborns just a few days old. They are now 6m old and coming into their own personalities. And mom and dad? Wow! They're in their groove, and have found time not only to get routine exercise, but also run a half marathon? I'll settle for some tips on how to accomplish just half of that please.

We miscalculated our meeting time a tad with naps, and by the end these guys were giving me a serious stink eye. But they're still cute ;p

Gifts: Santa Clara Family Photographer

This is the time of year when the majority of my sessions are about family portraits intended for those year-end greetings. And occasionally, a gift for the matriarch (or patriarchs) of the family. This type of gift was just what A was thinking, so a group of 3 siblings and their associated brood showed up to pose for grand-ma.

I won't lie, working with large groups can be hard. Actually I think I'm most challenged when working with groups larger than, say 5ish. But these guys were awesome. We took care of their most important photo in a matter of minutes, and the kids were off to the races. Speaking of kids, all 6 of these guys were awesome.

Now... I should mention that we met for this photo-session in the break of what was a very, very, very wet week. It had rained for so long, and the prognosis for our meeting wasn't looking good either. I was seriously stressing how we were going to make it work. Rescheduling was not an option, as 2/3 out of this bunch traveled from Sacramento, and time was of the essence. I knew that Santa Clara University would provide us with the shelter we needed for our main group shot, but as I broke everyone out into smaller groups, I was really worried how to keep the non-participants dry. But someone had some Karma points saved up, because the rain stopped just in time. Whomever it was... thank you!

It's pretty exciting to see little people change as they grow. I was this family's paparazzi since shortly before little M was born. We captured him being snug in mom's belly, his newborn squishiness, and last fall (man, I can't believe it's been a year). Both these dudes are so handsome, but they come by it honestly.

S' name means "One who is brilliant" and I gotta tell you, the girl lives up to her name. I was so impressed with the clarity and complexity of her speech, and ability to put together abstract concepts. A lot more than what I expected for a 3 year old, that's for sure. Of course, this did mean that my attempts to get her to follow my lead and pose for some photos with mom and dad didn't really go particularly well. She saw right through my games, but it's kids like her that keep me on my toes and make me do better.

The smell of Rosemary: San Mateo Maternity Photographer

I won't lie: every once in awhile I get into a creative rut, and it takes a fun session to get me out of it. My maternity session with A and C was exactly what I needed and I left that afternoon feeling happy and energized and excited. I couldn't wait to get these on my computer and start working on them.

A and C are expecting their little guy this holiday season. He'll be their December baby and will join 4 year old Lambchop, who is playful pup with a penchant for squirrels. I can't wait to meet him!

We did our session in downtown San Mateo. It's an interesting place to work given the foot traffic, narrow side-walks and zooming cars. To get some of these images I had to sprawl myself across the bushes decorating street corners. Luckily for me, those were Rosemary bushes. My jacket still smells of rosemary and I dare not wash it: it reminds me of the fun I had, and the creative energy that I left with. Besides, with a doggie named Lambchop, I thought the smell of Rosemary would be quite appropriate, no?

One of the best parts about photographing second+ time around parents is how much at ease they feel. First time parents are unique, because of the energy, excitement and overwhelming emotion surrounding them. Each set are special, while different in their own way. But what's consistent is how much care there is for the little person who just joined the bunch.

Into the woods: Chesapeake Family Photographer

I am lucky to say that I'm related to these people. C makes one mean holiday turkey; G was the first kid I ever fed (had to hide her chicken in apple sauce); I "think" I was the first person to show J how to climb a tree; and I couldn't luck out in the sister in law department better than K!
There was a set of photos that K had hung of J and G frolicking together amongst fallen leaves when they were itty bitty. I will fully admit that those photos inspired me to be a better photographer: so that I can get similar of my monkeys (one day). So I was really honored when she asked me if I could do a shoot for them.

We spent a chilly morning at the Chesapeake Arboretum. I wore 3 layers of clothes, but boy did that place take my breath away. Actually Virginia as a whole must be a photographer's dream. I'd drive by fields, and parks and think to myself "If I only had more time here..."

Land Ho!: Tiburon Family Photographer

Ok, I have to admit that when C called me To say "Hey, I'd like to do our photoshoot in Tiburon... on our boat" I was a little apprehensive. You see, I was not blessed with a stomach of steel and the last time I was on a boat (Maui 2004) I was on the side of the boat staring at the horizon, drinking all the ginger ale I can muster, while my husband cackled at the fact that the water was "smooth as glass". The idea of the SF Bay, a boat, and me focusing through at a tiny little camera window intimated me. But hey -- how many chances do you get to have a photo-shoot on a boat? So, as long as we agreed to stay docked, we were good to go. I'm glad we did because it was an experience like never before, and fun! Dare I say, I'll do it again, AND I'll even brave "the open waters"!!!

We ran amok at the Yacht Club and ended up at Old St. Hillary's. A & C married here and I'd forgotten just how gorgeous this location was. A pristine white chapel, sitting solitary atop of a hill. If this is not photo-drooling territory, I don't know what is.

Little B joined this beautiful family just last Tuesday. He is sleepy and cuddly and comes complete with the squeaky newborn cry that just makes you want to snuggle him forever. He has already perfected the peeing on the dad trick. He he -- yep, boys -- they go for distance :)

Big sis, M is of course amazing with him. She pats his head, gives him kisses, and tries to make it better when he's upset. In general she is such an awesome kid. If I could custom order a daughter, I would hands down ask for one just like her. I hope B grows up to be just like his sister.

Mini-fall: Belmont Family Photographer

To the families who participated: thank you so much to you guys for turning out, and bearing through a chilly and gloomy morning.

I got to meet 5 new families, some awesome, awesome kids, and two very cooperative dogs! My day of mini-sessions went off very well, and I’m looking forward to doing more of them in the future. I will likely reserve more times next fall, and another day in spring next year, so keep an eye out.

Mini-sessions: Bay Area Photography

I’ve had several inquiries over the year if I host mini-sessions. Given that the holidays are around the corner and I’m more requests than I can accommodate, I’ve decided to open my calendar for a morning of minis. If this day is successful, I will host more throughout next year.

What is a mini-session? A mini-session is a quick, 20 minute session, held at a specific location. You’ll receive 5 full resolution, digital images on a disc within 2-3 weeks. It’s a great way to get a small set of images to include in your end of year gift & mailings, and especially great if you’re on a budget.

Location: Belmont, CA. I'll provide you with a meeting spot once I can confirm weather.

Where X marks the spot: San Mateo Maternity and Family Photography

Every once in awhile I'll have a specific image I need to exorcise out of my head. The majority of time I accomplish this with no special planning, or props, but every once in awhile... every once in awhile I need to spend a bit more time planning.

Last week I had one of those shots, and it was something that demanded a bit more help from mother nature. I needed a hill. A hill of golden grass with no distracting structures in the background. I drive by these hills almost daily on the 280, so you'd think that wouldn't be a problem... except that access has proven to be a challenge. I drove over 2 hours Saturday morning looking for a spot for my shoot, until I finally found it. And S was so gracious to volunteer part of her maternity session with me to do this. The location was so obscure, it was literally off the side of a free-way. I gave her GPS coordinates because that was only slightly better than "take the last, un-labeled exit before the 92 interchange, turn right and drive until you hit a dead end at the fence" (almost verbatim from my email) directions I can provide. S had to scale a hill, supporting herself against a barb-wire fence. She was SUCH a great sport about it too. All the while I was paranoid that she didn't slip and fall. I didn't want her to get hurt (above all), but I also knew should something happen to her, hubby Z would have my head :)

The sad part? I had everything going for me: the location, the cooperative model... except for the blue skies the vision in my head craved. I got my shot, but it just wasn't the same. None-the-less, I captured some other images atop that little hill that I am very, very happy with.

Where should I print my photos?: Bay Area Photography

Where do you print your photos?

You might be scratching your head thinking "Well, why does it matter? Does it matter?" The short answer? Yes! Printing service providers span the gamut on quality. This is why professional photographers are so picky about where the prints they deliver to you are done. They ask to handle the printing, so that they can ensure that the final result has the best, longest lasting quality.

However you shouldn't have to compromise on quality even for your own personal photos. The pictures of your last vacation, or child's first birthday party should actually display the detail that you captured. You should be picky about where you print your photos, discriminating not only against value, but also quality.

The question as to where I recommend people to print their photos has come up now a few times. So... I did what any normal, data junkie would do: I performed my own test. My mission was to test out several local, as well as, online photography printing services. My goal: find the best quality and value.

I discovered two main things: 1) a printing place won’t make a bad photo great, but boy, can they make a great photo look bad, and 2) you can get some exceptional prints in surprising places.

I checked out several places, comparing them not only against each other, but also against the original photograph I had created. I looked at a professional lab, a couple of popular online services, a local camera store, and a few general stores. I didn’t do an exhaustive print with every place in my locale because I: 1) don't have an unlimited budget (sad); 2) didn’t want to overwhelm myself. So I picked 7 victims: WHCC (the professional lab where I print your photos), MPIX and Shutterfly (representing online printing services), Ritz (in the Hillsdale Shopping Center, representing the local camera printing service), Costco (Foster City), Target (Foster City) and Walgreens (El Camino & Ralston in Belmont) for the general stores.

The results? Well… see for yourself:

Let me add a few disclaimers at this point:
1) I am not paid by any of the above establishments.

2) The images above are a photo of a photo. I tried to be as honest as possible and did NOT muck with color. So there is a bit of a muted/blurry feeling to the non-originals as a result. I will be very happy to bring these print samples for you to see in person if we are to meet. (Just please ask me to)

3) I did NOT calibrate my color space for any of the paper for any of these services. I wanted, like you would if you were to print with them, to get an idea of what an average print would look like.

4) The prices listed below indicates price per 5x7 photo after tax, shipping & handling fees. That's why there's a little * by it.

So what did I learn:

I learned that I will NOT be getting any prints done at my local Target or Walgreens. They only offered printing on glossy paper. Their colors were way off, and the printer killed any detail in the shadows and darker portions of the photograph. Worse still, they were the most expensive! Cost per photograph (5x7): $1.62* @ Target, $1.72* @ Walgreens. Time to receive order: a few hours, but that didn't make up for the poor consumer choices, bad quality, and high cost. Overall grade: F.

Let me justify that grade a little more. Here is a close-up of Target's print compared to the original. First off, the skin tones were so bad, it looked like M was competing against George Hamilton for craziest tan. Do you want to look orange? Or purple? Or blue? I hope not!
Second, examine the lack of detail in the hair. Now consider what a photo you took camping at dusk might look like: black. Or a pretty sunset: bland.

Walgreens performance was even worse.

I'm feeling a bit luke-warm on Ritz. While I think the overall quality of the image is pretty decent, they only gave me the option to print on glossy paper. I don't like glossy, and being able to choose paper type is important to me. Time to receive order: a few hours. Cost per photograph (5x7): $1.07*. Overall grade: C+ (on account of the limited paper options).
Update: I've been told that Ritz does offer matte paper. It's just a really hard to find option in their interface. Accordingly I'll raise their grade to a B.

I was a little surprised to see Shutterfly's end product, to be honest. I'd been a long time customer, and had been (in general) pleased with the results, and with their customer service. However, compared with others Shutterfly was blurrier than I expected, and the color balance just didn't do it for me. This, by the way, is Shutterfly's mail-out service. Not their "pick up in a store" option. Time to receive order: a few days. Cost per photograph (5x7): $1.44. Overall grade: C+

However, I was quite impressed with MPix. Minor loss of detail, good color. In some ways this is not surprising, because MPix is the consumer arm of Miller's Professional Imaging. Miller's is another very well known professional photography printing lab. Many pros use it. Clearly the quality (and from what I hear customer service) is reflected for the consumer option. All you need is to sign up for an account with them, which is free. Time to receive order: a few days. Cost per photograph (5x7): $1.59. Overall grade: A.

Then there's Costco. The level of detail is good (granted not as perfect as MPix and WHCC), but close, and certainly better than Shutterfly. Time to receive order: a few hours. Cost per photograph (5x7): $0.39*. That's right! Not only is this a good print, it was an excellent value as well. Overall grade: A.

Of course, WHCC is awesome. For your professional prints, I would recommend them hands down.Time to receive order: 1-2 days. Cost per photograph (5x7): $2.81. Yes, it's the most expensive option, but their performance in prints of various sizes is consistent. Overall grade: A.

So what is my final recommendation? Go with Costco. Good quality; great value. If you don't have a Costco membership, but can afford to wait 2-3 days, choose MPix. You will not be disappointed. If you can't afford to wait for Mpix, go with Ritz.

If you're having your photos professionally taken, though, use your photographer's lab for prints, especially for anything 8x10 or larger. The quality is noticeable and the colors won't fade over time.

I hope this helps you out, the next time you're wondering where to have the contents of your digital camera printed.

Sometimes the best part of a photo-session happens right at the very end. It`s those last few photos that happen right when you think you`re done and are just about to pack it up. I`ve learned to not put my camera away until I`m walking away to my car... and it pays off!!!

Like when I met with C, J, and baby O. It wasn`t until we thought that we were done that J asked "Hey is there a police station or a fire department near by?", "Yes, actually, we`re a few yards away from the police department. Why?" Then J mentioned his crazy idea of pretending to drop O off at a Safe Surrender station. As it turns out the Belmont Police doesn`t have this, so we had to drive a few blocks away to the Fire Department. Which rocked because we got lucky and were able to snap a few shots with O IN the firetruck.
Don`t worry -- baby O went home safe and sound. I'm sure no matter how late O keeps C & J up at night, they would never let him go :)

I love it when my clients start to feel comfortable with me, open up, and start letting their sense of humor come through! It's awesome!!! Sometimes I wish we could skip right through that first hour of getting to know each other, and get right to "that" moment in our session, when everyone is finally at ease. Truly the best images come out of those moments.

A is here!!! She came into this world fast and furious and now this family of 4 is settling into life as a family of 5.

We prepared the scene for her sleepy photos with great care. The temperature was nice and warm, there was soft music in the background, and she had a full belly; but instead of going down for a snooze she decided to stay up for the party. Just as well though. A has such beautiful, sparkly eyes, and I`m happy to have captured them.

From her very start H has been about making her own time-lines. She made mom & dad wait past her due date to make her appearance; and she made us all wait a good 30 hours from announcing her coming to finally joining us on this side of the womb. 2 yr olds are speedy little things. They also like to fully exercise their own mind and show you that no matter how nicely you ask (or plead) they will do their own thing. Such was the case with little A. He likes his tractor, and his special trains, but he didn't really enjoy staying in the same spot for more than ... Oh ... 5 seconds :)

It's not very often that I come across a session where the youngest of my participants wasn't willing to be entertained (even through bribery). Hr even caught onto my imaginary squirrel spotting. He's a bright dude, to be sure! Our shoot quickly converted to a 'hey, let's just go play on the playground instead' kind of session. In a way, it's actually worked out great because this documentary IS about who A is right now: a curious, little dude who wants to see it all, throws leaves in the air, and jumps around.

I wanna know what dinner-time is like for these guys. 3 teens (well, 1 almost-teen) being teens: laughing at each other and with each other. It was awesome! The laughter was contagious, I assure you.
It's great to be able to walk into a photo-shoot and have the majority of the family immediately feel comfortable with you. With adults this isn't easy. This is why I was so impressed with how easy-going the M-kids were. You guys rock!

Oh, notice where these photos were taken? Belmont: side of road. That's right! I'm still on my trend finding random jewels for photo-shoot spots: shade, low foot traffic. I'm in love. I'm keeping this one secret ('cuz I like the low-foot traffic), but expect to see more of it over the next rain-free months :)

L is heading out to San Diego soon for the BlogHer conference and, in preparation, for her social-media meet & greets she asked me to take some head-shots of her. How can I say no?

On a side note? Do you ever wonder how I come up with the locations for the sessions you see grace this blog? Many of them are recommended by the clients I work with; some I just find on a satellite map, and some I see while driving around. Like the one on this shoot for example. I was driving down the freeway, and thought to myself "Man, this wall could make an awesome back-drop for a photo-shoot!" I liked the brick, I liked the ivy; didn`t dig the 65mph traffic and the idea of becoming road-kill. BUT, the other side of the wall could work just as well. So that`s what we did. I couldn`t exactly give L the address of "wall on the other side of the 101", and I`m sure she went "Uhmn... Oh-kaay?" when I told her where I wanted us to meet, but I`m glad she was game. It worked out. Not someplace I`d take you for a family shoot with small kids, but for an adult setting, works just fine :)

M and E are some of the sweetest kids I`ve met. M is so helpful, and caring, and kind. No wonder mom and dad want more of them. And more they`re getting. Sweetness: Mountain View Family Photography

My family albums as a professional photographer sit lonely and sometimes neglected. This is not without good cause, I assure you. For starters, my desire to participate in family activities, vs. being the dedicated documentarian; and 2) photographer child syndrome. This condition occurs when your child has been accosted by a camera enough times, that merely the sound of the camera powering on incites them to turn around and bolt. I have a lot of “back” photos of my big dude. The little dude is, thankfully, still immobile and is therefore a captive subject, but he’s also not far behind from being infected with this disease.
Then of course there’s the fact that being behind the camera means that few photos grace the likeness of my being.

If Kasey (proprietor of Kasey L. Ross Photography) is like me, well… then, I hope that these photos will give her family albums some love.

Kasey`s little ones are really sweet. It`s a great preview of my life in a few months.

Over the moose and onto the bear: San Jose Children Photographer

Aaah, Blue Eyes. He`s back!!! I love seeing him grow so much. I also love seeing who his favorite friends are as he does so. Mortimer (the Moose) is out. He`s apparently old news now, and Bartholomew the Bear is in. Bart joined the family following a grandma-inspired trip to Build-A-Bear.
Bart accompanied us through the majority of our photo-shoot, being relieved of duty for a few minutes when E discovered the fun that are pine-cones. Those didn`t last too long though and Bart was back on shift.

By the way, I seem to be having a very airplane inspired month. My last 2 sessions were on the pathway of planes landing, which made for a handful of intrigued little boys. The Guadalupe Rose Gardens are actually right below final approach for South-West and the planes were so low, you could lie on your back on the grass and just stare at the belly of a plane flying overhead. It was pretty cool!

Don`t you think this is a smashing photo of K? I`m starting a campaign to convince her that this needs to be her next Facebook profile photo. You agree?

Shark Bite: Burlingame Child & Maternity Photographer

One of the side-effects of doing photo-shoots in public spaces are all the... colorful... people that I come across.
While working with L, an older man came by, introduced himself, and told us that the little boy standing before my lens was Jesus re-incarnated (and the baby in mom’s belly was his best bud James). Well, only time will tell if what he said is true, but I know already that L is destined to be someone special.

L has gone through more in his ripe 2 years of life than most people should ever go through. Late last year, L received a liver transplant, after his own failed. He lived on maximum life support awaiting a donation, and in the nick of time a liver was found. I don’t know how it’s possible to say “Thanx!” to the family that reached beyond the grief of loss of their own child to donate life to this little guy. It was a pretty remarkable (and scary) story to follow, but we all grateful that L was given this second chance at life.

Today he is a vibrant, affectionate and funny little guy. And that scar across his belly? He’s proud of it, and is quite happy to show you his “shark bite” (that’s what Mom & Dad call it). Shark bite or not, it’s one heck of a story to tell.

C vowed that 2011 would be an excellent year, and I believe he’s right… because in another few weeks another dude or duddette will be joining their family. I wish you all the best guys!

I won`t lie to you. Many of the faces that have graced the pages of this blog are those of people that I have the privilege of calling friends outside of being a photographer. Nepotism aside, I am flattered when they ask me to document significant milestones in their life.

Like M. She and A (and the rest of us) are anxiously awaiting the birth of their little girl at the end of this month. And today was about celebrating the past 36 weeks. Actually, much more than that. My time with M and A was more like a Sunday morning, hanging out, where I just so happened to have my camera. I had a great time. A did a stellar job getting as comfortable in front of my lens as he could get, and I felt privileged to capture some very beautiful and intimate moments between him and M. Thank you guys!

I dare you! I dare you to look into A`s eyes and smile (or pout) and deny her anything she asks you. I think only her parents are immune to her charms, and even then I'm not quite so sure.

A has embraced the requirements of being 3 to the fullest: she is a ball of energy, fun and sass.

Being a photographer for this age group is interesting: it's about turning our session into a game, asking for participation, being respectful when the little one in front of you says "No!", and a whole lot of going with the flow (although that last bit is pretty much the case with any child shoot).

A certainly knows what she wants (the whole bag of cereal, thank you very much; not just an O) and what she will compromise on. As a parent, I assure you, this can be maddening.... but also, really stinkin' cool. In my mind's eye, I can certainly imagine A as a bright, confident, self-reliant young woman. T and P are great role models in this regard. I can't wait to see who she'll become.

How to choose the right size print for your room: Bay Area Photographer

Have you ever seen one of those (awesome) online promotions for 50% off of a canvas print? Sure, you have. Of course you buy it, and then you wonder: "Well, what size should I get? 8x10. That seems big to me. Certainly big enough for my favorite photos!" Then after weeks of anxious waiting, it arrives. You hang it on the wall, and see just how tiny it is.

You know... something like this:

It's really hard to sit by your computer and try to imagine what the right size photographic print would be for a certain space. Take the above, for example. Over that standard queen size bed, look at what a difference a 20x30 canvas print makes.

Or if you have a couple of favorite photos you would like to hang, wouldn't a grouping look great? Something perhaps like this:

Ok, why hasnt anyone told me how awesome 6 yr olds are? S and I had a deep conversation about the like-ability of Disney characters depending on the wear (or not) of pants. We discussed the physics of buoyancy in ducks when pants are present.

Photographing these guys was awesome! S is such a ham (I mean, look at the expressions on his face) and little sis N was so sweet. And man, the way she looks at her brother: there was so much devotion and adoration in her eyes. It was also so great to see N interact with her sisters. While they may not be 6 and 1 themselves, you can see that there's a lot of goofiness, and love here too. Honestly, as a mom, that's the kind of relationship I hope that my kids will have (and continue to have in life).

She glows!: Hayward Maternity Photographer

Have you heard the expression "Shes glowing!" in reference to pregnant women? Yeah, for the longest time I thought it was pretty trite. Until I met V. I hadn’t ever encountered a case of pregnancy glow so I just assumed it’s a compliment people expel at pregnant ladies to make them feel better about how uncomfortable they might feel. But in her case it is so spot on. Doesn’t she look amazing? She has such a serene smile, and she and dad-to-be M just exude happiness. Wait… did I mention there were TWINS in that belly? That is one spectacular baby bump right here.

Her little ones will join big sister M, and one very protective, four-legged, fur-brother, Spartan. They will be loved!

I have a lot of respect for parents of twins. I mean making one baby happy and getting some rest is hard enough, but can you imagine with two??? This has been a looong and strange winter. And wet. Boy, has it been wet. Despite all the downpour, I'd been pretty lucky with week-end photoshoots this season, but the rain was just committed to being part of my shoot with R, J and S. It poured the day we met. We had already rescheduled once due to weather so we were committed to make it work no matter what, and we did.
I brought out my big (little) dude's umbrella, unsure if we'd have a chance to take some photos of S pouncing into puddles. Aaaand that was a mistake because S loved that umbrella. It was actually a little difficult to get him to part with it, and poor R had to get him an umbrella of his own. Sorry, R!
Best part of that Saturday? The rain of course stopped as soon as we wrapped up. Gotta love it!

Somewhere in the sleep deprived haze you blink, and the child with the wrinkly newborn feet is now smiling and cooing. I don’t think there’s any other time in our lives when, developmentally, we change as much as we do in those first 365 days.

I have come to understand the reason that newborns have soft heads past childbirth: it’s to survive the occasional involuntary abuse by their older siblings. At least that’s the case at our house. I don’t think, though, that this will be a problem for little L. His big sister N is so loving. She’s freely dispensing kisses, baby cuddles, and humorous entertainment (check out her new shoes below) and will make an amazing big sister.

So… I think I found a good way to get a toddler in the same shot as his parents. Have them kiss. Worked like a charm for R. Whenever his parents got the smooches on, he would run over for an inspection. Man, if this worked for all my shoots, I will have to instigate a full on kissing policy.

I last saw R a few months ago, and was so surprised to see how much he’d grown. He’s taller (no duh), but also is now so much more a little boy than a toddler. What is going on here? How did that happen?

Fit for Motherhood: Redwood City Photographer

Michele and Sara are the two awesome Stroller Strides instructors for the Mid-Peninsula.

For those of you unfamiliar with the program, I encourage you to check it out. It's a great way for recent moms to get (and stay) in shape. The work-outs are good (I qualify "good" as anything that makes me sore the following day), but a lot of fun. For me to say a work-out is fun is a big deal, because, to be honest, I don't like working out. If I could qualify sitting on my bed flipping channels as exercise, I would. Yet I want to look, and be fit, so my couch-potato impersonation has had to give.

Babies are integrated into the session, so their attendance is most welcome (but not required). Now, if you want to use the excuse "My kid hates to be strapped into a stroller with nothing to do", know that I tried this too. You walk the stroller around a lot, you sing songs and work-out around your kid, keeping them entertained. And if all else fails, Michele and Sara are awesome enough to hang back and make extra funny faces at your fussy little one, so that you can get that last rep in.

Anyway, it's a great program. Check it out! I feel lucky to have found it, and even luckier to have Sara and Michele ask me to do some promotional photos for them.

The girl is on the move: Palo Alto Children's Photographer

I often wonder how much of my kids' behavior today is an indicator to their personalities to come. Only time will tell.

And if that is the case then this little girl is going places. A is now 1 year old. It was almost a year ago I met her for the first time. She's now walking. Determinately walking, mind you. She trips, gets back up without a peep and keeps on. I like that.

Everyone's story was fun to read, but here is the winner's.

I am not a big birthday person so my immediate reaction was I can’t enter this contest. But then I stopped and thought. And I remembered the way I felt on my 30th birthday…On this birthday I remember not having any wishes to make.

We went through a long period in our marriage when we weren’t sure we would ever get to be parents. But through the gift of our daughter I was already a mom. I had my girl…after being chosen for her I learned that the joy of being a mom had nothing to do with seeing those 2 pink lines. But I will admit I did always wonder and worry…how I could support her when her time came to be pregnant and give birth?

On my 30th not only was I celebrating with my wonderful husband and our amazing daughter I was also getting to experience being pregnant. I remember spending the day looking at my Jennifer and feeling my son kick and thinking it just doesn’t get any better than this.

So that’s my totally sappy story of my bestest birthday ever! Now vote for me to see how cute these kids are!!

A chilly winter day it wasn't: San Jose Family Photographer

My first day on US soil was in February. I left Europe and my winter jacket, pants and boots to see people walking around Berkeley in flip-flops and t-shirts. It was kind of surreal.
Well, this week-end was a fabulous repeat of that day. 70 degrees. Beautiful blue skies, and a visit with E and his family. E is now 13 months old!!! He's fully walking now, cutting in some new teeth and getting the hang of the whole running thing. It's serious business, I tell you.

So in honor of my birthday, I’ve decided to offer YOU a gift: the gift of memories. You can receive a free photo-session by yours truly. Well, it’s February and my camera and I are back in business. Maternity leave has been wonderful, and I’ve stalked my own brood enough with my lens. They’re tired of me and are pleading for me to focus my attention to someone else: YOU!

I'm really looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. If you're thinking about booking a session, please let me know.

Also, for a limited time, through mid-March, I will be able to take mid-week bookings. If you are interested, please get in touch. I'm offering a 20% discount for any Monday through Friday session during this time.

Little M isn’t so little anymore. Just like that 3 months have gone by, and A asked me to help decorate their walls with some canvas prints of the kids. Happy to do so, I setup my living room for their sibling photographic debut. The living room is where I take the monthly pictures of my little monsters... aaaand it also doubles as our play-room (yeah, we’re one of those households where the kid toys have taken over). Clearly this was a mistake, because little K’s agenda was to make num-nums in our play-kitchen. Not so much a match with the adults’ goal, huh? No cookies in the world could convince her to sit down for a few photos, and we tried. Don’t judge – I’m not above sugar bribery for a good picture. Alas, she’s too smart for us: she got her cookie and was on her merry way. M on the other hand was a very cooperative model, and gave me smiles to boot.

I love these kids!

A boy and his umbrella: Belmont Family Photographer

Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a yellow child's umbrella? As it turns out, pretty darn impossible, and I should know because I spent 2 days looking and calling around various stores. All because my little dude asked for one, and apparently I'm too much of a softie to say "No!" In lieu of a yellow umbrella, I settled for a green monkey one (from Cheeky Monkey in Menlo, in case you're curious). I was really fortunate that he wasn't set on the "yellow" and he fell in love. And I mean love. How do I know? He volunteered himself for a date with my camera... provided that his umbrella could tag along too. See, a photo-willing two year old is even more elusive than a yellow umbrella, so you gotta take your opportunities whenever they come along. So here is my G... with his umbrella, of course.
Our play date evolved from playing with the umbrella, to playing with the fallen leaves and the umbrella, to just the fallen leaves.

I'm a happy mommy.

If you know me, you know that patience is not a virtue I've been blessed with. Waiting, for me, is a special kind of torture.

Well... it appears that I might have passed on the impatient gene to the kids, 'cuz our little dude decided to make his appearance into our lives 3 weeks ahead of schedule. He's doing awesome, and we're remembering how sleeping in 2.5 hour intervals turns you into a blubbering fool.

May I introduce you to our Little Dude #2: S.

A few weeks ago, I had the awesome opportunity to document the birth of my best friend's son. It was the first birth I've really witnessed.

You might be scratching your head, wondering, "But you have a kid, right?". The answer is "Yes!", but you see, I slept through his birth. After over 10 hours of intense labor and some pesky cord-wrap shenanigans, I was ushered into an emergency c-section where the numbing power of drugs was quite nap inducing. So, A's labor was a big treat for me. I felt like I could live through her. And she did amazing!!! While she swears she screamed the whole time and scared other laboring people down the hall, I'm here to tell you that if I had let my camera record audio in addition to pictures, she'd see that her "sailor-speak" was rare, and perfectly timed. She awe-inspiring, yo!

What was also really cool, was that as little M was making his entrance into this world, the dude residing in my belly started kicking up a storm. No joke. It was as if he was saluting his buddy.

S and R's little girl is one month old. She is sweet and adorable: everything that the "Sugar and Spice" poem is all about. And her parents? They look amazing too (see for yourselves). I remember when G was about a month old, I had a solicitor come to my door. My hair was a horror; I was wearing a robe over a shirt with baby spit-up, and I won't even talk about my house. G was in my arms screaming his head off. We were a sight to behold. I was so, SO far away from looking good for photos. S & R, for first time parents, you're gonna have to share some tips! Although, I gotta tell you, in my case that solicitor never came back again (and this was not her first trip to our house). If you keep looking the way you do, how are you going to scare away the sales-people?

Meanwhile, here are two of my favorite boys. M and M are growing up, and they are two of the sweetest and cutest kids, no? We met at Gamble Gardens a few weeks ago, and I'm so glad we moved up our shoot, because had we waited until our original time we would have been completely rained out. Gotta love October weather -- it's nice an unpredictable that way. Gamble Gardens is a beautiful spot. I can't wait to go back in the spring when it's lush and all the blooms are out. We have known A and C for such a long time. I remember how amazing C looked when she was pregnant with S. Now, here we are 5 years later, and its scary how quickly time has gone by. S is an awesome big sister to D, who is almost 2. On the morning we met, there was lots of running, and drawing, and riding bikes: in other words a fun time. S referred to it as being a free range child, which was funny, yet so true.

Pssst! Guess what? More than a turkey will be joining us this Thanxgiving for dinner. Our household of 3 bipeds & 1 quadruped, will be expanding by one (other) little boy this late November. We're thrilled... and understandably scared.
With this big change, I will be taking a maternity break for a little while. I'm sad about this, but know you'll understand. I will be working through the end of October this year and returning early next year. My calendar is already booking fast, but I still have a few days available in September. What's blue and gold and looks extra cute growling on the grass? That would be litle G. She and big sister O, are Bears in training. Mom and dad both went to Cal. As a matter of fact it's where they met.
I remember when my little guy was G's age, I thought to myself: "It will be so cool when he gets older. He will understand me when I ask him to look up at me." Well, I'm now longing back for those days, because as little ones get older, they really make you work for it -- O really is channeling bear: you had to track her, chase after her and bribe her with trail mix.

Little E has some of the pretties blue eyes I've ever seen. I mean, look at 'em! S and I have known each other for more than half our lives. We’ve been there for each other through so many of life’s big changes: high school, college, break-ups and heartbreaks…. looking for that first job. M and her family traveled for over two hours for our shoot! It's unbelievable, but I'm so flattered, and so glad, because we got a chance to trek around downtown San Mateo, which is quickly becoming a favorite spot to go to. It's got industrial corners, downtown shops and cafes, and an expansive park with a Japanese botanical garden... all within a 5 block radius. I made these guys walk, but they were such great sports, and I really appreciate them for it.

And their little girl? Adorable! Shy, at first, but once she warmed up, she had lots of poses to share.

Remember little B & J? Well, they have a whole lotta aunts uncles and another little cousin to have fun with. I met up with them all at San Gregorio beach. It's really awesome to see a family enjoying a day together.

When I was little I longed for an older brother. Being the eldest, this was obviously a tall order. Alas, I was not born in a soap opera family, so no long lost older brothers came to call, and I got quite used to my younger sister.
However, it was days like today that made me remember why the idea of older brothers seemed like so much fun. C got lucky. She has not one, but 2 of them. Yeah, yeah, I'm sure it made for some interesting taunts as a kid, but look at them now! They're so much fun around each other and it's contagious. Look at those smiles! I didn't even have to bribe them with jelly-beans to get them either ;p

K is the amazing talent behind Kelly M Photography. Her birth photography has wowed me and brought tears to my eyes many a time, and she has trully been an inspiration to me. She has also photographed my family since my son was born, so she is very dear to my heart.
In addition to being a fabulous photographer, K is about to be a mommy... again. Her little man G is hilarious, and now they're adding a little girl to their brood. I'm really happy, and excited that she let me document her family (and belly) before little W arrives.

Little M is now a big brother. Just a few days after we met, little M (or M2 as his mom calls him) decided to make his appearance... Two weeks ahead of schedule.
A new baby means a big adjustment, but A and P look to be handling it so well. And they look great!

M1 says he doesn't like being a big brother, but he does an excellent job changing his baby doll's diapers.

Sleeping Beauty: Walnut Creek Family Photographer

Little Miss A is but 6 weeks old. When her mom told me so, as I asked, I had shivers run down my back. I remember my son's 6th week of life all too well. It was as if someone replaced my little peep-squeak of a boy with a shrieking demon that did one of two things: sleep (barely) and scream off the top of his lungs.

In contrast A was so sweet, calm and cuddly. She slept through almost the entirety of our photo shoot, as if determined to sleep through her pretty dress. It wasn't until we stepped outside to play with big brother X and Mommy that she decided to join our party.

The Beach: Halfmoon Bay Family Photographer

R and J have a lot of memories at the beach, but no photos together with their little M there. So off we headed to scenic Pomponio Beach.

While the weather was beautiful, Miss M wanted nothing to do with being on the sand. The park sand seemed to be OK. The sand at the beach on the other hand? Not so much. Perhaps it was the high tide wave we had to run away from that scared her off. Sorry, Little M! Pretty soon you'll like the beach so much Mom and Dad will have a hard time getting you home.

The tooth-faerie gifted little A some mean molars this Valentine's day. It made for a fussy start to such a beautiful day (a rarity in this El Nino rain season). However, some Tylenol and a few hugs later, A was back to his happy, cheery (and did I mention speedy?) self. I've never seen a cuter toddler version of a "No, No, No!" He really is a ham!

We had our first big rain-storm for the year on Monday. It was really, really wet, windy and cold to boot. Despite this I am so, so happy that M and J came out for pictures with the kids. The Stanford campus provided us with some great shade from the rain and a beautiful scenery to boot. I had a great time with you guys and hope you did too!
